Phloem |
The phloem is used for transporting food around the plant |
The phloem is one of the two types of transport tissue in plants. The basic function of the phloem is to carry out translocation. This is the movement of food substances from the stems to growing tissues and storage tissues.
Features of the Phloem:
|
The Phloem is composed of several types of specialised cells, including; sclerenchyma, parenchyma, sieve elements
and companion cells.
Sieve element - is the conducting element of the phloem Companion Cell - is the"life support" cell for the sieve element Fibres - made of sclerenchyma cells and provides structural support for the plant Parenchyma - acts as packing material between other cell types and helps transfer materials to the sieve element complex. |
